Meet The Team

Stuart Burgess

I have been riding bikes for as long as I can remember, and mountain bikes for over 20years.  After moving to Margaret River 10 years ago I have been enjoyed both recreational riding and endurance racing.  A comprehensive background in martial arts has also provided a strong understanding of body mechanics and technique.  I have a passion for our beautiful natural environment and aim to encourage people of all bike riding skills to enjoy it through mountain biking.  With the increasing popularity of mountain bike riding I see a growing need for correct technique, skills application and skills awareness, along with bike maintenance and understanding, to make the experience of mountain bike riding a safe and enjoyable experience.

I got my first mountain bike when I was 13 years old and never looked back. I moved to Margaret River 5yrs ago with my wife Jodie and now mountain biking has taken over our lives, in a good way. I ride for fun and I love passing on any knowledge I have about mountain biking to anyone that will listen in the hope that their enjoyment while riding will increase. After racing in many of the growing Adventure/Multi Sport races and long multi day mtb races around WA I noticed that there was a need for people to learn how to ride off road. So the idea of Dirt Skills Margaret River was born to help people become better off road riders, to have more fun and to become safer rides. No one likes gravel rash!

I have been riding for about 10 years now.  I started as a way to get fit while having fun and never looked back.  I am always learning and love travelling to other mountain bike destinations to see the sites and ride some varying terrain.  I am keen to get more girls and women into the sport and show them what fun it can be!  After establishing Margaret River Off Road Cycling Associations's Lil' Miss Orca program I have started Jnr Girls on Dirt aimed at intermediate girls looking at improving their skills and thinking about racing.  I have my Level 1 Professional Mountain Bike Instructors Certificate as well as MTBA Level 0 and Level 1 and also hold my Remote First Aid Certificate.

As someone whose work focuses on measureable results, I was excited to put my Dirt Skills knowledge to the test. Just before the course, I was stopping to work up my nerve before each feature on a certain trail and then successfully completing the harder ones about 50% of the time. A few days after the course, I was able to complete three circuits of the course without getting off the bike, which felt awesome. I could really feel the difference in applying fundamental skills like looking down the trail and getting my weight back, which I had thought I was doing before but needed some help to learn properly. I would recommend the course to anyone who wants to make a quick improvement in their skills, to build confidence, and to reduce nasty falls. Isn’t that everyone? Thanks Dirt Skills!

Thanks Dirt Skills Margaret River for a fun & informative afternoon with Stuart & Dave sharing their knowledge & skills in an encouraging & enthusiastic way. I learned so much in a couple of hours. My cornering is better & un-weighting the front wheel is something I never thought I'd do, and now manage easily! Thanks guys - brilliant afternoon.“
